Very much an ensemble piece, That 70s Show revolved around the main character of Eric Forman and his gang of teenage friends growing up in Wisconsin in the 1970s. As funny as the show was though, there was a chance that one of the key cast members was almost not cast in her role. It's a sad state of affairs for the series' fans - but if $30 per season is out of the question for you, you can also pick up the entire series in the form of DVD and Blu-ray box sets, also on Amazon, for around 40 to 80 bucks, depending on the format. That 70s Show was one of the great television comedies of the early 2000s. Second, the company must have slapped an insane price tag on That '70s Show - because if deep-pocketed Netflix was willing to let the series go, and those other streaming platforms rescinded their interest, then the asking price must simply have been too steep. But since you're here, you must have the same question that every other fan did that fateful September day: Where can I stream That '70s Show now? Streaming rights to older properties tend to change hands fairly often, and the series' nearly decade-long run on Netflix could be seen as the exception rather than the norm. Of course, this is par for the course these days. In September 2020, though, fans were dismayed to discover That '70s Show had vanished from the streamer's catalog. In fact, the entire series had been available for streaming on Netflix since 2011. Also central to the series were Eric's flighty, boozy mother Kitty ( Debra Jo Rupp) and his no-nonsense father Red (Kurtwood Smith), who spent most of his time threatening to kick, put his foot in, or make a hat out of his son's butt.įans of the series have, until recently, had no trouble finding every single episode of That '70s Show to watch online. The series - based in the weed-infused late '70s - follows the antics of geeky, sharp-witted Eric Forman ( Topher Grace), whose on-and-off courtship of literal girl next door Donna Pinciotti (Laura Prepon) was alternately encouraged and mocked by his buddies: the lunkhead, good-natured Michael Kelso ( Ashton Kutcher) his sometimes girlfriend, spoiled rich kid Jackie Burkhart (Mila Kunis) stoner conspiracy theorist Steven Hyde (Danny Masterson) and creepy-yet-sweet foreign exchange student Fez (Wilmer Valderrama). Looking like a combination of Kriss Kross and Das Efx while sounding like neither, Tupelo, Mississippi rappers Swae Lee and Slim Jimmy came on hard in 2014, taking Migos' bright style of trap music and adding a little of David Banner's sway to the bottom end. Most refreshingly unexpected of all, he sets almost half of the film in Spanish even though the games provide a cheap rationale for why everyone is speaking English in 15th century Spain. In a production of this size, that obstinance comes off as willful strangeness - he drapes the film in a frigid gauze of gray so that light only pokes through in shafts, he frames throwaway scenes with the stillness of a renaissance painting, and he evens the whole film out with a haunting score by his brother Jed that sounds closer to Tim Hecker than it does Hans Zimmer. If anything, Kurzel has fully embraced it, the Australian director of grimly airless indie fare like “Snowtown” and “Macbeth” refusing to sacrifice a scrap of integrity for his characteristically bleak studio debut. I could go on about Callum’s fellow prisoners, or his sordid relationship with his father (Brendan Gleeson), or how Charlotte Rampling somehow ends up as the film’s big bad (just be grateful and don’t ask questions), but it’s safe to assume that the “Assassin’s Creed” movie hasn’t forsaken the video games’ signature WTF factor. Using a glorified spinal tap to access the user’s genetic memory and then project it on a billow of fog, the giant contraption allows Abstergo to see the 15th century through the eyes of their captives’ great-great-great-great-great (etc.) grandparents. ![]() ![]() Okay, here’s where shit gets silly - just take a deep breath and we’ll all get through this together: Abstergo, a monolithic company run by Alan Rikkin (Jeremy Irons) and maintained by his daughter, Sophia (Marion Cotillard), has dedicated billions of dollars to a secret project where they abduct descendants of the Assassins and strap them to a machine called “the Animus,” which is sort of like a super intense VR version of. Cut to: 2016, where a career criminal named Callum Lynch (Fassbender again, this time with a snarl) is on death row in California for murdering a pimp. The kind of movie that opens with a wall of dopey text about an ancient grudge and the violence it makes possible for our viewing pleasure (like “Star Wars,” but slightly ashamed of itself), “Assassin’s Creed” begins during the Spanish Inquisition, where a man named Aguilar de Nerha (Fassbender, enjoyably terse) leads a secret brotherhood of killers as they plot to protect a relic called “The Apple of Eden” from the rival Knights Templar. As cold and weird as anything a major American studio has released since they started gearing all of their products for a Chinese audience - it borrows almost as much from “Under the Skin” as it does “The Matrix” - Kurzel’s film illustrates how free will can wiggle its way into the franchise system, how the messiness of bloodshed can be the only way to break free from the shackles of bloodlines. On the contrary, this bizarre, borderline incoherent action movie becomes the most interesting blockbuster of 2016 because of how defiantly it confronts the expectations of its heritage. ![]() For one thing, this dense, dour, and oft-delayed holiday spectacle is based on a popular series of video games - a grim omen in a year that brought us the likes of “Warcraft” and “Ratchet & Clank.” For another, Kurzel’s moody adaptation is told on a massive scale, budgeted to compete with other franchise monstrosities like “Rogue One” and “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them” - the familiar trouble with making a film like this is that it’s too expensive to afford any risks.īut “Assassin’s Creed,” in which Michael Fassbender’s blank protagonist quite literally repeats history, refuses to be defined by the past. Several documents are scattered throughout the game, sometimes written by cult members, other times written by Sullivan Knoth himself. However, I do take issue with poetically describing how slitting a child’s throat makes you wet with blood lust. It’s real, it’s raw, and impacting when done right. Honestly, I’m okay with that kind of story telling. There’s some sequences that relate to a fourth grade girl and a priest at her school two guesses how that turns out. I have no issue with using religion as a way to tell your story, nor do I have a problem with exploring the darker parts of these faiths. Outlast 2‘s obsession with demonizing radical Christianity (and more specific, Catholicism) is all fine and dandy. I’m not kidding, it’s going to get rough. If you consider yourself squeamish or disturbed, do yourself a favor and skip the next paragraph. Additionally, there are aspects of this game that I don’t feel needed to be included, nor do I feel like celebrating them. I don’t want to spoil much of it, mainly because there’s some really decent scares in the gore. The imagery is reminiscent of True Detective (Season 1), rural and dirty. Outlast 2 uses radical religion as a platform to present some truly horrendous content, sometimes for no reason at all. Shocking moments usually had a narrative basis, and/or provided some sort of perspective to ponder. The original Outlast was a great mix of atmosphere, suspense, and shock. Here’s the big thing the stuff that people will be talking about in reference to Outlast 2 for months. This attention to individual phobias made for some great sequences, but the overall story was a bit lackluster in retrospect. These story beats focus on specific phobias like fear of the open water, being buried alive, and so forth. However, there’s quite a few sections of the game that are absolutely brilliant. The narrative concerning the cults and your wife remains ever present, but remains on the back burner for most of the second act. However, after a few hours and the introduction of the flashback sequences, the game seems to lose focus. The story starts off strong, focusing on the cult (and an eventual opposing cult as well). The story is mainly broken into three acts, but gets confused and jumbled halfway through. ![]() There’s something dark and secretive about Blake’s past, and provides some decent motivation for rescuing his wife (beyond marital loyalty). When they get wind of a mysterious murder in the desert of Arizona, they set out to get the scoop. Outlast 2 tells the story of Blake and Lynn, two married investigative journalists. If the idea of religious child-murdering cults, sexual depravity, torture, and glorification of violence doesn’t deter you, continue on. Horror junkies might not be too thrown off, but your average consumer will surely be disgusted by Outlast 2 and the lines it crosses. With that said, I deliver this honest and necessary warning: Outlast 2 is incredibly disturbing. With no apparent ties in narrative to the original, Outlast 2 sets its own path and ups the ante on the morbid and disgusting.
